This article brought readers inside Magic Leap, a much hyped Florida startup that was building a pair of glasses that “beam images directly into your eyes.” It sounded like science fiction. It turned out the descriptions of the company’s technology were wrong. Magic Leap was facing the same technical challenges that other companies like Microsoft had faced when trying to develop augmented reality glasses. Magic Leap had helped perpetuate these misconceptions with marketing that included videos purporting to show off the technology that were actually made by Hollywood special effects companies.  The article and its dominated the conversation in Silicon Valley and helped bring Magic Leap back to earth.
